Project "Avant-garde without boundaries"
The Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź was the first to make modern art available to the public in 1931 in Europe, a public museum open to the experience of avant-garde art and open to every guest. In the Year of the Avant-Garde, we celebrate this openness by making the core of the 20th and 21st century Art Collection available to those who require special methods of contact with art - visually impaired and blind people, deaf and hearing impaired people, and people on the autism spectrum. They are the recipients of the "Avant-garde without boundaries" project.
We believe in everyone's right to equal access to culture. Therefore, people on the autism spectrum can read 100 specially prepared descriptions of works of art. They are prepared in simplified Polish, modeled on Charles Kay Ogden's rules. In them, the vocabulary was limited to 800 basic words; the expressions are simple and devoid of metaphors. People who cannot read can read specially prepared pictograms that provide basic information about works of art. For hard of hearing people and deaf people, 60 films were prepared in Polish Sign Language. Descriptions of the work of art were provided by a Polish Sign Language lecturer. They can also read a text in Polish, similar to a sign message. Visually impaired and blind people can listen to 100 audio descriptions of works of art recorded by a narrator. The materials prepared in the "Avant-garde without borders" project are not intended only for people with disabilities, but also as a tool for educators and therapists.
The materials prepared in the project will be made available for public circulation from November 1, 2017 as part of the new online platform of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź.
The "Avant-garde without boundaries" project was implemented thanks to the "Accessible Culture" program of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
"AVANT-GARDE WITHOUT BORDERS" PROJECT IMPLEMENTED AS PART OF THE "AVAILABLE CULTURE" PROGRAM.
