Archives of the future - a project under the Inspiring Culture program

The "Archives of the Future" project implemented as part of the Inspiring Culture program in cooperation with Artpool Art Research Center, Museum of Fine Arts - Central European Research Institute for Art History and the Polish Institute in Budapest.

The goal of the cooperation between three partner institutions planned for 2024 is to organize an event in Budapest using innovative exhibition technology - large-format interactive touch screens, the so-called Magic Wall. The installation will present the results of research work on the archives of two artists: Andrzej Partum and György Galántai.

As part of the cooperation between the MSŁ and the Artpool Art Research Center, the archives of: the Poetry Bureau founded by A. Partum in 1971 and Artpool founded by G. Galántai and J. Klaniczay in 1979 will be examined. The archives are related to the art of post and the network of artists from 70s and 80s, which is an opportunity to compare both in terms of structure and content. As part of the Poetry Bureau, which he ran in his private apartment, Partum organized exhibitions and shipments to leading representatives of conceptual art. Partum's archive consists of 448 hand-labeled folders, the contents of which include postal art objects, correspondence with artists, hand-copied leaflets, and photos, and in this form they are a unique edition.

In the first part of the project, two visits are planned for both strategic partners in order to familiarize themselves with the contents of the archives and to conduct an individual analysis of the topics, geography and chronology of the archives. The aim of the meetings is also to exchange best practices in working with archives and to select materials for a joint exhibition in Budapest. The results of the research work will be developed in the form of articles that will be published, among others, on partners' websites as an announcement of further activities using archives. Guests who scientifically deal with the work of artists of this period will be invited as experts to participate in the study visit to Łódź.

Part II of the project is the presentation of archives using interactive touch screens arranged in the form of a wall that can be used by several people at the same time. The screens will display digital images of artifacts from the archives of both institutions and additional materials created during the project, including: videos promoting the project. The installation will be accompanied by an exhibition of selected objects from the Artpool archive. The materials will be presented in showcases to mark the physical presence of the archives.

Thanks to the use of modern exhibition technology, materials physically located in separate and distant places will be combined in one space, in the Platan Gallery in Budapest. The investment in a digital solution will allow the presentation of extensive material according to developed scenarios using threads taken from both archives. The available tagging function will allow you to create common thematic categories and combine threads from both archives into smooth narratives. Selected facilities will be equipped with QR codes that will link to additional content on partner websites. Selected content will be available in both language versions.

The project will be implemented by a team from the Scientific Documentation Department of the MSŁ, including:
