Project "Independent"
In 2017, one hundred years passed since the 1st Exhibition of Polish Expressionists at the Krakow headquarters of the Society of Friends of Fine Arts. This event is considered a turning point marking the beginning of Polish avant-garde art, and its round anniversary became the impulse to organize nationwide celebrations under the slogan of the Year of the Avant-garde. Their goal was to show the general public that the avant-garde is an element of national heritage that had a significant impact on the shaping and understanding of modernity. The year of joint activities was intended to increase awareness of the role played by local artists in creating the avant-garde movement, as well as to show how their original work, in a practical sense, changed the world we live in today.
On the occasion of the Year of the Avant-Garde in 2017, the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź organized exhibitions and published publications co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the "Independent" Program. The Multiannual Program "Independent" adopted on May 24 this year. by the Government of the Republic of Poland is an outline of activities that are intended to encourage Poles to get involved in the celebration of the centenary of regaining independence. "Independent" defines three values that distinguish Polish identity: freedom, respect for dignity and human rights, and solidarity. The primary goal of the "Independent" program is to strengthen the sense of civic community among Poles.
