Powidoki (After images)

November 22nd, 2005 - December 31st, 2005

„After-images”, it is a famous series of post war paintings of Władysław Strzemiński, that are part of the collection of Muzeum Sztuki. The series is a leading motive of the exhibition organized on the occasion of 60th anniversary of Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, which is named after this great artist. Strzemiński was a co-founder of this academy and a lecturer until he was removed - by the decision of the then Minister of Culture, W. Sokorski - because of his stubborn refusal to comply with canons of the socrealistic art.

We also would like to remind that museum in Łódź owes to Strzemiński an initiation of the valuable international collection of the 20th century’s art, which is admired to date. Thus, through the paintings of the author of the collection and precursor of the avant-garde art, we create - in a current perspective - new associations of works and artists in various constellations. At the exhibition, there will meet various generations and personalities, who are explicitly associated with the academy (S. Fijałkowski, A. Starczewski, S. Wegner) as well as the artists, who were there shorter and played various roles (A. Mikołajczyk, J. Robakowski, R. Opałka). This cross-section– from the nestors to the youngest graduates of the last years – should determine anew contemporary draft of the art after Strzemiński. Both identity element and dynamics of divergence were realized independently of the time or type of the technique (paintings, photographs and DVD).
