Conversation with Richard Demarco and Terry Ann Newman

Richard Demarco - artist, international curator and one of the most important figures in European artistic life in the second half of the 20th century - will return to the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź. He will be joined by artist and Director of the Demarco European Art Foundation, Terry Ann Newman.

The conversation will explore Richard Demarco’s life and artistic practice, his longstanding curatorial activity, and the relationships he built over decades between artistic communities across Europe. A particular focus will be placed on his relationship with the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, which began in 1968 with Demarco’s first visit to the institution. Since then, a longstanding friendship and collaboration have developed between Demarco and the museum, including, among other initiatives, the presentation of Polish contemporary art in Scotland.

The conversation accompanies the ongoing processing and cataloguing of the Richard Demarco Archive, donated by Richard Demarco to the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź in 2025. The donation reflects his longstanding relationship with the institution, as well as his trust in its mission and its approach to working with collections.

The Archive is an exceptional resource for research into the art of the second half of the 20th century, offering a perspective on the international and transnational collaborations that were central to Demarco’s practice. His multifaceted activity is documented through approximately 2,500 artworks and several hundred boxes of archival material, including documents, photographs and ephemera.

Processing and cataloguing this material will not only provide a deeper understanding of the history of numerous artistic projects, but will also discover new connections between artists, curators and instututions operating in various parts of Europe.
