The Avant-Garde & the State
The exhibition and publication deserve praise for raising the very subject of the relations between the Avant-garde and the state, shown here in a broad perspective of time (from the interwar years to the post-1989 transformation) and geography (Poland and the context of her neighbours—Germany, Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary), for the presentation of which authors have been sought from those countries (Viktoras Liutkus, Pavlína Morganová, Viktoria Popovics). The issue remains poorly studied, highly stereotyped, subject to political views and emotions…
[The publication] contributes many new fi ndings, arguments, and interpretations to our understanding of the relations between avant-garde art and the institutions of the state. It warrants credit for avoiding and going beyond a Polish-centric focus and for making bold forays into areas usually ignored by art history (e.g., folk artists or artists’ incomes).
