Ophelias. Iconography of Madness

Project „Ophelias. Iconography of Madness” created by Zorka Wollny at Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, after being presented at Wrocław Contemporary Museum and Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre 1, adopted a book form. The publication begins with conversations with the actresses that Zorka Wollny had last fall, followed by a selection of photographs by Adam T. Burton and critical essays. Book relates to a live performance, it’s subsequent versions, but also to a film ation of the „Ophelias” created in ms² by Małgorzata Mazur.

It is a great pleasure for the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź and the Faculty of Painting and New Media at the Academy of Art in Szczecin to offer this publication to the readers with the hope that it provides a map of relations between the characters and the audience as well as a guide to the trails that „Ophelias” unveiled for artists and researchers.

Zorka Wollny creates acoustic compositions for institutions, factories and empty buildings. Her works inhabit a space between art, theatre and contemporary music, and are always closely connected to the historic and functional context of specific architectural sites. Wollny’s collaborative production style often involves public rehearsals and workshops in which she creates structures of cooperation with individuals as well as groups and communities, such as composers, students, actors and activists.
