Next chapter of "The Avant-Garde Museum" project - virtual presentation on e-flux
After the exhibition at Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź and the book, we present a digital version available on the e-flux platform: theavantgardemuseum.e-flux.com. The “Avant-Garde Museum” project, devoted to the beginnings of modern museology, was inaugurated in 2020 on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the founding of Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź
The main aim of the project is to introduce a wider audience to the challenges faced and solutions proposed by avant-garde artists in the field of museology. The Avant-Garde Museum is a project consisting of three, interdependent segments: The Avant-Garde Museum book (published by Muzeum Sztuki, Łódź, Walther König Verlag, Köln 2020), The Avant-Garde Museum exhibition (opened at Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź in October 2021), The Avant-Garde Museum digital version, produced jointly by Muzeum Sztuki and e-flux. The main subject of all three segments of the project—the book, the exhibition, and the digital platform—are four historical museum models: the Museums of Artistic Culture, Kabinett der Abstrakten, Société Anonyme Inc., and the International Collection of Modern Art of the “a.r.” group.
“Avant-Garde Museum” on the e-flux platform is available here:

The goal of this digital version is to focus on the connections, both historical and conceptual, between the four museum projects discussed. Since the issues discussed by the interwar avant-garde bear many similarities to the contemporary situation of art professionals (be it artists, curators, or art historians), the other important aim is to present the contemporary viewer with the historical museum models and draw links to the present.
The “Avant-Garde Museum” project is co-financed from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.
