Materiality of Film - lecture by Bregt Lameris
ms², Ogrodowa 19, Audiovisual Room
Should film archives be viewed as innocent sources? How are they presenting the history of film and history in general?
These questions were brought up during the lecture by Bregt Lameris, the author of the book Film Museum Practice and Film Historiography.
In her book Bregt Lameris, a researcher of film archives, shows how archival film is used in institutional exhibition strategies and how this practice links with using film archives to support the creation of contemporary films. During the lecture the author discussed the materiality of analogue film and how it is used in analysing the past. Bregt Lameris bases her lecture on the research that she conducted in film archives at Lichtspiel / Kinemathek in Bern (Switzerland) where, together with Barbara Flückiger, she developed a course titled "Materiality of Film". These film archives are one of very few places in Switzerland holding a big collection of analogue films; in addition, they preserve and restore diverse types of movie projectors, including non-standard Scopitones, that is lenticular film projectors.
