Katarzyna Kobro. Movement of Space-Time

This publication is about the theory and practice of Katarzyna Kobro (1898-1951) – one of the most important artists of modernity. Through essays, as well as descriptions of some of her pieces and projects, readers will understand her work as an example of avant-garde experiments with space, which are eagerly evoked in contemporary artistic practices.

Katarzyna Kobro pioneered in incorporating body and movement of the beholder in the total composition of the sculpture which was opening up to the space surrounding it. Her theory and practice is an amazing opportunity to reflect on the basic elements of experiencing the arts  - connections between art works, space, perception, corporality, and movement. Alongside Kobro’s works and texts we can also reflect on the social relevance of art understood as a laboratory for experimenting with embodied perception and the influence of modeling the space of everyday human behaviour.

This book is also a set of exercises in looking at Katarzyna Kobro’s art. Looking at it here and now. Looking at it in our imagination, and looking at it when we actually find ourselves face-to-face with Kobro’s work. We invite readers to move along the lines defined by her Spatial Compositions. Sense the understated sensuality of her Nudes. Restore broken connections between sight, body, matter, time and movement.
