Inspiring Culture. Creative Archives: Łódź-London

The goal of the project implemented by our Department of Scientific Documentation is to promote the cultural heritage of Poland at international level. The means to achieve this aim will be the presentation of rich archival materials of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź. They form part of the unique cultural heritage and are associated with the history of the Polish avant-garde, while documenting its relations with the international art scene. As part of the project, we will also show the processes and methods used by the Department of Scientific Documentation and the Library, which is managed by the Department. We will also join the discourse on modern methods of making the archives available and share good practices in the field of archiving and digitizing artifacts that accompany the process of creating Art.

The strategic partner of the "Creative Archives: Łódź - London" project is The British Library, a library with one of the largest book collections in the world, a forerunner in the field of document digitization and sharing data. We are planning to participate in a professional training in modern archiving processes, the "International Library Leaders Programme", during which we will be learning good practices on how to use collections in order to create platforms for communication with audiences, how to better design and manage digitization processes, store and preserve collections in the physical and digital dimension, how to catalogue and use new technologies in working with them.

The project also implements the thematic path 'Institutions of the Future'. The Internet as a medium of a new language, which is still undergoing evolution, actively influences the conceptual work with the collected documents, encourages to set new ways of combining ideas and develop creative formats for promulgating knowledge, of which the Muzeum is the depository.

As part of the project activities, we will learn about the experiences of some leading institutions related to this subject, and we will prepare a comprehensive narrative campaign presenting our resources and the methods of working with the archives developed by the Muzeum. The project will have the character of trip through the Muzeum collections.

We have also invited the Institute of Polish Culture in London to cooperate with us. We are planning a one-day expert meeting there to exchange experience and good practices in the field of working with archival material. We will also visit institutions recommended by the Institute of Polish Culture to initiate new contacts. We expect to be exchanging insights on displaying and sharing archives. The Institute will also contribute to a better promotion of our visit abroad through the available communication channels.

The project participants are employees of the Department of Scientific Documentation of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź.

Dates of the project: 9.10.2019 – 31.12.2019

Financial grant: PLN 156, 725

The project is co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage under the "Inspirational Culture" Programme
