Polish Painting in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries from the Collections of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź

“I Have Seen a True Masterpiece: Rodakowski’s Portrait of a Mother. This picture is a worthy successor to the one which so dazzled me at the exhibition,” Eugėne Delacroix noted in his Diary on April 8, 1853, having visited the Paris studio of Henryk Rodakowski.

The exhibition by Andrzej Łobodziński – one of the leading representatives of the Łódź neo-avant-garde – will present two parallel, complementary trends in his artistic activity: painting and experimental sound art, which was created in cooperation with Ireneusz Pierzgalski and Krystyn Zieliński.

For the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Neoplastic Room, we have attempted to reconstruct the historical layout of the Modern Art Gallery as it might have looked like during its inauguration in 1948. The basis for this was an idea of presenting the collection of art described and published by Marian Minich in his text For a New Organization of Art Museums  (1965). It was a concept very close to Władsyław Strzemiński’s Theory of Vision  (1958), wherein the general aim was to study the form of artworks.

I do not recall exactly when the letter A first appeared in my pictures. I can only say approximately. Dating my own works is not my strong suit… But I can point to the picture in which it first emerged. I also know that from the beginning it was like an apparition whose presence surprised even myself, all the more in that it took on a powerful, decisive form. It was upside-down and, standing on its head, was begging for the company of a circle and an X. Hard to say why I doubled my response in the picture… I instinctively struck out the letter with a bold diagonal line.

Artur Nacht-Samborski. Masks of Time is an exhibition that takes the viewer to the late period of the artist’s work, stretching from between the 1960s to the mid-1970s. Many of his paintings from that time are devoid of the features of conventional portraiture and can be described as the images of   “heads” or “masks”. Their uniqueness allows us to distinguish them  from the artist’s entire oeuvre and consider them in the context of his life experience. “Each portrait,” as Hans Belting wrote, “wears the mask of the time that produced it.”
