Marek Chlanda. A Study of Obidience
Marek Chlanda has never belonged to those artists who create unambiguously political or critical works. Nor has he engaged in any political movements. His distanced and ironical perspective towards the surrounding reality, both socio-political and the one concerning the world of art, however, has not been left without an impact on his projects. Yet, this separateness, in fact, presents problems with the classification of Chlanda's artwork according to the traditional genres of art. Drawings, sculptures, objects - Marek Chlanda's works escape these unambiguous categories.
The exhibition of Marek Chlanda, an artist whose work in various ways is associated with the history of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, combines historical elements with contemporary ones. It follows the artist and his research processes. It examines the maps he has left, sketchbooks, traffic records, and traces of gestures. It opens to his sensual and intuitive associations. It looks for traces of choreographic strategies within different families of works. It refers to the assembly tools rather than thinks about the composition of space and chronology.
Apart from the introduction by Anna Saciuk-Gąsowska and an unpublished interview with the artist conducted in 1985, this publication consists of texts by Piotr Graczyk, Katarzyna Słoboda, and Magdalena Kownacka, who examine individual ideas and themes featuring both in A Study of Obedience, as well as in other realizations by Marek Chlanda that have been created from the 1970 to the present day.
In her essay, Katarzyna Słoboda focuses on the work Good Morning/Buenos Dias which premiered at Herbst Palace, the branch of Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, on 20 April 1995. She draws readers’ attention to the nature of Chlanda’s works, which are sensual and open to serendipity because they are linked with seeking creative solutions at the junction of diverse genres of art. He views visual arts as a field related to music where one can achieve virtuosity through continuous repetition, internal discipline and endless practicing. However, the goal of the practice is not to achieve technical virtuosity or ideal style but to become sensitive to rhythms and tones of reality as well as relationships and links between abstract cultural notions, afterimages of memory.
Text by Piotr Graczyk A Study of Obedience. Scholarly Art revolves around the private nature of Marek Chlanda creation and the figure of artist’s studio as a kind of cavern – empty space, external environment that is artificial and relatively separated from the world. According to the author, a cavern is a pre-condition for creation and for research aspect of art.
Finally, Magdalena Kownacka’s text is devoted to drawing places that Marek Chlanda has been creating since the 1980s on the way, often in accidental settings, such as, e.g., vacant or private apartments. He would use the existing architecture to create multi-layered and multidimensional sets of works that have become integrated with these particular spaces to such an extent that they were being gradually destroyed as the places themselves were undergoing destruction.
