Is our World Excessively Pictorial? On Pictorial Turn (in Poland). Lecture by Łukasz Zaremba

First in the series of meetings, entitled ‘Nothing to Be Seen. Theories of Visuality against Non-visual Issues of Contemporary Era’, will be devoted to the commonly shared conviction on the surplus, overproduction and deluge of images in the late modern period.

The point is not only to ask whether the world is now more pictorial than it has ever been (and whether it has indeed become too pictorial), but also to consider the social function of pictorial images and their ability to generate change. This is because the notions such as a ‘visual era’, the ‘world of screens’ or even the ‘pictorial turn’, by denoting their omnipresence rather than the meaning, do not always indicate the core of the images’ role.

The destination point and the example from the contemporary Polish visual culture is the problem of ‘billboardosis’, that is the excess and spontaneous pullulating of advertising images observed after 1989. Do billboards actually show anything and do people notice them whatsoever? And if not, what are they for?

The subsequent meetings within the ‘Nothing to Be Seen’ cycle will concentrate, among others, on the images vis-à-vis the climatic changes, images and global capital flows, images against the migration issue as well as the question of images in relations to the new media ‘black boxes’, etc.
