18 October 2016, Tuesday at 18:00 hrs, admission free

Screening of Barbara Hammer’s films and meeting with the artist will be moderated by dr habil. Monika Talarczyk-Gubała

The event is organized in connection with Barbara Hammer’s film retrospective. Between 10 and 18 October the artist will visit Kraków, Warsaw and Łódź to show her works and discuss them with the audience at MOCAK (Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków),  Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, and Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź.

Early films of Barbara Hammer focus on taboo subjects, such as menstruation, female orgasm or lesbian sexuality. “Dyketactics”, Barbara Hammer’s film of 1974 is considered the first film to show lesbian sex.  Thus, the production has become part of the history of cinema together with groundbreaking films made by Jack Smith and Andy Warhol.

On many occasions, Hammer’s films raised controversies and viewers criticized them for to openly addressing the physicality of human body, aging or intimate relationships. Subjects of her short films secured her status as a star and a personality in LGBT circles; formal experiments have made Hammer’s films inseparable components of the history of independent filmmaking.

We will see four films made in the 1970s:

“Dyketactics” (4 min);

“Superdyke” (25 min);

“Menses” (9 min);

“Double Strength” (16 min).
