"When I see artists using the language of abstraction, they do it to understand and explore the mechanisms which underlie not only the processes of shaping society, creating information flow systems but also organising the functioning of cities and architecture. These processes are often invisible, it is important for artists to present them" said Inga Lāce, the curator of the "Riga Notebook. Following the Lines of Wacław Szpakowski" exhibition, during the opening. Our discussion will follow this intuition as we will try to recognise the consequences of today's processes of pluralisation; pluralisation of creative practices and validation of knowledge in the reality surrounding us where artists have been looking for their place for a long time. We will attempt to answer the questions of what people, who use the language of abstraction in art, are exploring today and what the complicated relationships between science and artistic activity look like. The variety of artists' approaches presented on the exhibition will be confronted with questions that bothered Wacław Szpakowski himself. Can art teach us a new vision and provide alternative descriptions of the world? What are the characteristics of visual language? What is more valuable for the viewer - sensual experience or intellectual satisfaction?
