The catalogue ”Une avant-garde polonaise: Katarzyna Kobro et Władysław Strzemiński” accompanies the exhibitions showcasing the works of the artistic couple at Centre Pompidou in Paris (24.10.2018 – 14.01.2019) and at Gemeentemuseum in the Hague (23.03.2019 – 30.06.2019).
Both exhibitions are organised around the notion of “realistic utopia” and their goal is to demonstrate that in the works by Kobro and Strzemiński utopia was not reflected in revolutionary destruction but in constantly emerging new, alternative visions of a better world. They show Kobro and Strzemiński’s artistic models, which were intended to provide inspiration and act as hallmarks of practical changes in the existing order. By following how personal and artistic paths of this couple of artists unfolded, these exhibitions juxtapose the real utopia embodied in their creative practices with their biographies immersed in real, historical context.
