Living in California Stephen Kaltenbach is one of pioneers of Conceptual art. He was included in the most renowned exhibitions of Conceptual art: When Attitudes Become Form (1966), Information (1970), 955,000(1970). Since 1970 he has been an academic teacher and – as he puts it – he creates “in hiding”.
The exhibition planned in the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź will be the first solo show of Kaltenbach’s art in Poland. It will present his classic conceptual works from the second half of the 1960s, which were symbolic operations intended to distort institutional infrastructure of art. His Time Capsules (initiated in 1967), capsules with artist’s instructions, were expected to operate independently of institutional and commercial market. Other works of the artist often anonymously available in public space contradicted the commercial nature of an artwork and highlighted active involvement of art with the reality of its environment. Besides the works from the 1960s, the exhibition will also present the latest works of the artist from the series Bad Ideas.

In October 2015 Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź joined a two-year multistage international project (funded with the resources of the European Union Creative Europe framework programme) that aims at generating innovative tools of communication for the needs of participating museums, which represent similar characteristics (when it comes to their location, collections, size, educational programme ,and challenges). Besides Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, the project encompasses the following institutions: Universalmuseum Joanneum GmbH (Austria), Art Museum of Estonia (Estonia), Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb (Croatia), and Museo d'arte contemporanea di Bolzano (Italy).
All of these museums focus their activities on two areas: working with the so called “young adults” aged 15 – 25 (who are considered a challenging target audience hard to mobilise) and collaborating in delivering local initiatives. The project - which combines artistic, curating, and educational interventions and explores participatory practices – will be delivered based on studies conducted in its initial stage on a variety of tools used to communicate with the audience available to museums of modern art and perspectives of their efficient development.
ENRICO PRAMPOLINI AND THEATRE OF MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTIONS. Futurism and Staging Techniques of Polish Avant-garde

Theatre of Mechanical Constructions is the first exhibition that will provide a comprehensive overview of linkages between Futurism and Polish Avant-garde. It will present the works by Enrico Prampolini - the author of L’atmosfera scenica futurista (1924) Manifesto, one of the most recognisable representatives of Italian futurism, theatre reformer and an initiator of a series of theatre exhibitions – that he produced in Czechia, France, and Italy against the backdrop of staging experiments of Polish constructivist groups: “Blok”, “Praesens,” and the circles of „Zwrotnica” journal. The exhibition in Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź will present artistic explorations of Enrico Prampolini placing them side by side with set pieces made by Polish artists, radical kinetic projects proposed by Andrzej Pronaszko, Szymon Syrkus, and Stefan Bryła. It will extensively explore the usually marginalised subject of links between Italian futurism and Avant-garde movements in Central Europe shown in a new perspective, which highlights multilayer and ambiguous history of European Avant-garde.
Grupa Budapeszt presents: TRANSMISSION AS A RECORD. IGOR KRENZ’s solo exhibition in three parts

The exhibition organised by the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź originates from the conviction that the major challenges for the contemporary world come from phenomena emerging from seemingly marginal outcomes of technical reproduction, as well as from related traps and ramifications of abstract thinking, which “dematerialise” the reality and make it “unreal”.
Igor Krenz, one of the most important Polish Post-conceptual artists, focuses his attention on the polysemic notion of transmission and the exhibition will be an attempt of going beyond the world of arts to answer the question whether a piece, which has once become a work of art, can come all the way back to become an element of the real world. The exhibition made up of three autonomous parts devoted to the main themes and strategies underpinning the artist’s oeuvre will try to approach the issue from a different angle to reveal the unobtrusive logic of what is “real” in the post-real world.
The exhibition Transmission as a Record is one among three parts of the project of Grupa Budapeszt, composed of Igor Krenz, Michał Libera, a sociologist working with sounds, author of sound essays, a producer and a curator, and Daniel Muzyczuk, a curator and editor at the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, who also conducts research. The event will be accompanied by the first issue of the catalogue of Igor Krenz’s works.
MONTAGES. DEBORA VOGEL AND THE NEW LEGEND OF THE CITY

The exhibition will reveal linkages between aesthetic concepts of Debora Vogel, a writer and art theoretician, with Avant-garde practices of the interwar period represented by, inter alia, the works of artists brought together in the Lviv group of “artes” and individual artists, e.g., Leon Chwistek and Władysław Strzemiński. A friend of Brunon Schulz and Witkacy, Debora Vogel authored poems, which portrayed the lifestyle in modern urban space subordinated to the principles of rational organisation. The exhibition will show works that make reference to the popular iconosphere of pre-war Lviv filled with the advertisements praising commercial world and the rising consumerism. It will present documentary photographs of Lviv from the 1930s together with contemporary city images. It will offer the experience of moving within the city space providing evidence of still pertinent dimension of Vogel’s theoretical reflection.

Exhibition planned to tell the story about the culture of everyday life and changes implied by rapid civilisation shift and modernisation of society at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It will focus on the intertwining of family, private life with social and public sphere. The exhibition will make part of permanent exposition of the Herbst Palace Museum.
ORGANIZERS OF LIFE. DE STIJL, THE POLISH AVANT-GARDE AND DESIGN

The exhibition will draw on the legacy of one of the major and the most influential European Avant-garde design groups. It will present selected parts of De Stijl oeuvre and make reference to the effort of Polish Avant-garde inspired by the Dutch art, to projects of groups such as “Blok”, “Prasens”, and “a.r.”, as well as to the Władysław Strzemiński’s Neoplastic Room designed to house the body of works from the International Collection of Modern Art. Its important component will be made of works of Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, an architect and furniture designer from Utrecht, whose designs were sometimes referred to as “flexible functionalism” and remained within the Avant-garde framework of developing a rational and organised environment for a modern man.

JOSEPH BEUYS: OUTSIDE THE BOX

The exhibition planned as a collaborative effort of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź and the Espoo Museum of Modern Art will be the first presentation of Joseph Beuys art in Finland within the last 30 years. Its main goal will be to present ideas from the rich oeuvre of the artist (German sculptor, theoretician who developed the theory of social sculpture, according to which political actions are more important that the creation of an artwork), which seem to have remained the most pertinent nowadays; that is why we will re-read the threads in Beuys’s artistic effort, such as activism, ecology and the understanding of power. The central point of the exhibition will be Polentransport – a selection of work of art donated by the German artist to Muzeum Sztuki in 1981. It was the artist’s gift but also a historic artwork associated with times of agitated social activity in Poland, regained empowerment of society, developing of the notion and feeling of solidarity. The exhibition will provide the starting point for reflections on the ability of individuals and groups to act in the global world.
Joseph Beuys – Thinking Differently is intended to become a travelling exhibition that will be accompanied by the first edition of an extensive catalogue of Polentransport in English.
KOBRO AND STRZEMIŃSKI. AVANT-GARDE PROTOTYPES

A monograph presentation of the works of two artists, central personalities associated with the Polish Avant-garde of the Interbellum. The exhibition is planned as the first such a broad overview of their oeuvre in Spain. Its goal is to show the works of art by Kobro and Strzemiński as the key artists of European Avant-garde and to introduce the Polish Avant-garde into the global mainstream. The exhibition is co-organised by the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and it will display the majority of works of the artists from the collection of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, as well as their artworks owned by the National Museum in Warsaw, National Museum in Krakow, the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, as well as Polish and foreign private collectors.
