What determines how we perceive the world around? Why did ancient Greeks present the world differently than 20th century avant-garde artists? And what is realism? These fundamental aspects of aesthetics are discussed by Władysław Strzemiński in his “Theory of Vision”. Re-edited by the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź almost fifty years after its last publication, the work is a selection of lectures in history of art read by the artist before he was dismissed from the Łódź State Art School by the authorities of the then People’s Republic of Poland for disregarding the canons of Socialist Realism.
The book provides a theoretical summary of Strzemiński’s artistic practice and aesthetic reflection. His theory stems from the assumption that our vision of the world continuously evolves while the ways we look at things around change and have got accumulated predominantly under the impact of external conditions: historical experience, cultural and social background. “In the process of seeing it is not important what the eye seizes mechanically but what man becomes aware of in his vision” – claims the major Polish avant-garde artist. By analysing visual stimuli, generalising them and testing we develop visual consciousness and our seeing abilities enhance at two levels: as a result of biological evolution and due to changes in how humans perceive reality. And precisely for that reason each age develops its specific perception of reality and artistic practice different from the previous ages.
„A Theory of Vision” is the outcome of Strzemiński’s long-term reflection and an exceptional evidence of theoretical awareness of the artist who exerted a lasting impact upon the development of visual arts. This work teaches us how we should look at the evolution of artistic perception over time; it explains relationships between the evolution of a society and changes in arts and combines artistic education with the history of art.
